Built from Experience, Not Theory
French Succession Support was created after I personally navigated a succession involving both France and the UK.
During that process, I encountered many of the same challenges that other families face: unfamiliar French legal terminology, language barriers, document requests that did not seem to have a UK equivalent, practical property problems, and the difficulty of coordinating professionals across two countries.
This website exists to make that process easier for others.
What We Provide
Our aim is to explain UK–France succession matters in clear, practical language.
We create guides, resources and support services to help families understand:
- What steps may need to be taken.
- Which documents may be required.
- What common French legal terms mean.
- Which professionals may need to be contacted.
- How to organise the practical side of a French succession.
- What issues may arise when managing matters from the UK.
The content is based on first-hand experience, supported by publicly available information and practical lessons learned during a real succession.
What We Are Not
French Succession Support is an independent guidance service.
We are not solicitors, notaires, tax advisers or regulated legal professionals.
The information on this website is intended to help you understand the process, prepare for conversations and identify the right professional support. It should not be relied upon as legal, tax or financial advice.
Every estate is different, and where your circumstances require professional advice, you should speak to an appropriately qualified solicitor, notaire, avocat, tax adviser or other regulated professional.
Why This Matters
Many families dealing with a French succession are not managing large, complex estates.
Often, they are simply trying to understand what has happened, what documents are needed, who they should contact and how to keep the process moving while dealing with bereavement.
Large international firms may be more focused on high-value estates, leaving many ordinary families to work through the practical difficulties themselves.
French Succession Support was created to help bridge that gap.
Our Approach
We focus on practical, plain-English guidance.
That means:
- Explaining terminology clearly.
- Highlighting common problems.
- Sharing practical steps that helped in real situations.
- Helping families understand what to ask their notaire or solicitor.
- Pointing people towards the right type of professional support.
- Providing checklists, templates and resources to stay organised.
Our goal is not to replace professional advisers.
Our goal is to help you feel better prepared when working with them.
Independent Guidance and Professional Support
Where appropriate, we may help you identify the type of professional you need, such as a French notaire, UK solicitor, French avocat, sworn translator, funeral director, estate agent or other local specialist.
We do not provide regulated legal representation or make legal decisions on your behalf.
Instead, we help you understand the process, prepare your questions and navigate the practical realities of a UK–France succession with more confidence.
Final Word
French succession can feel overwhelming, especially when you are managing it from the UK.
This website was created to make that process more understandable, more organised and less isolating.
We hope our guides and resources help you take the next step with greater clarity and confidence.
